Write what you know” is one of the most confusing pieces of screenwriting advice I’ve ever heard. What you know is probably boring as hell, but that doesn’t mean you can’t use it to spice up a script. Look at the National Treasure movies; filled to the brim with trivia and tidbits about American history, but it’s mostly used to add spice to the characters and plot. Writing what you know shouldn’t be your primary drive.
